Left to right: white and green bands crossed by stripes of 'drop-stitches'; lilac with embroidered clocks; narrow bands of alternately blue and black and white; tie-dyed in black and white to give a marbled effect.All have welts at the top.

They were kept up by the tightness of the trousers or pantaloons. Ribbed tops started to be made for men's socks in the 1840s. Marked 'A' below the welt. Exhibited by J R Allen of Allen & Solly at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862.
